About Our namesake, Dr. Stevenson

Dr. Pretlow Lee Stevenson Jr., affectionately known as Dr. Steve, was born on March 21, 1943, and lived a life marked by faith, service, scholarship, and unwavering devotion to family. He graduated from Norfolk State University with both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in biology. His academic excellence led him to Howard University Medical School, where he served as a microbiology instructor before entering Howard University Dental School.

While at Howard Dental School, he pledged  Omega Psi Phi and later became a proud member of the Suffolk chapter. His commitment to brotherhood and service remained a guiding force throughout his life.

Dr. Stevenson married his college sweetheart, Dorothy, and together they shared 56 years of love and partnership. Her passing in 2024 deeply affected him, yet he continued to honor her memory through service and ministry.

For more than 42 years, Dr. Stevenson operated a family-centered dental practice where his children, grandchildren, and many other relatives worked over the years. His motto was simple and sincere. He treated every patient like family. He was a dedicated member of Covenant Community Church and lived out his faith through consistent service, mentorship, and generosity. In the months following his wife’s passing, he spent significant time in Ghana, West Africa, serving on missions and helping prepare for the opening of the Pretlow L Stevenson Learning and Leadership Academy.

Dr. Pretlow Lee Stevenson Jr. entered his eternal rest on March 7, 2025. His legacy continues to inspire the mission of PLS Academy, shaping a new generation of leaders with the same spirit of faith, compassion, and excellence that defined his life.
